Abstract :
A Family of modular multilevel universal controller (MUPC) is introduced in this paper. The new concept makes use of any already installed parallel-grid-connected modular multilevel converter through extending some of the converter modules to build another series-grid-connected multilevel converter (of same or reduced size) as a grid reinforcement measure and also for providing various FACTS functions. This concept potentially provides extended range of dynamic functionality to the grid, while making use of already installed assets, providing solutions with reduced cost and footprint.
