Abstract :
This paper discusses the BPA experience of implementing Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) in operations studies. The previous methodology of manually including each RAS action as part of the applicable contingency definition is both time consuming and error prone. A more holistic approach was chosen with the goal of allowing automatic deployment of RAS based upon the initial conditions and changes in topology caused by contingency actions. This allows any power flow condition to be simulated without the need to modify the contingency files. This method has been tested and works well with both regional planning case bus-branch model and the breaker oriented real-time State Estimator model. It has proven to save time, reduce work load and minimize errors. A step by step modeling approach is presented.
