Abstract :
This paper proposes that a reliable and efficient integration of distributed generators (DGs) needs strategic planning and operation for distribution systems. The paper illustrates that today´s policies such as plug-and-play and those outlined under IEEE standard 1547 cannot support a large penetration of DGs sending power to the grid. The paper explores possible challenges and potential opportunities in integrating a large penetration of DGs. The key point of the paper is designing a model-based adaptive policy to link the methods engineers use to policy design for achieving efficient and reliable performance. Two strategies that could be used to achieve this are outlined and discussed: enhanced plug-and-play and third party siting and operating review.
