Abstract :
Leaky-wave antennas are based on the radiation along transmission lines, either due to natural radiation regimes or periodic perturbations. The leaky nature of higher-order modes of microstrip lines was a discovery only at the end of the 1970´s. Phase (velocity) engineering by metamaterial used for leaky-wave antennas came up in the early 2000´s. This overview gives a short review of basics and three examples of realized leaky-wave antennas.
