Abstract :
Mechanical sensitivity of pre-stressed unsymmetrically layered piezoelectric plate in large deflection due to lateral load is studied. The nonlinear governing equations based on von Karman plate theory for large deflection were solved using a finite difference method, by taking the simplified linear analytical solutions as an initial guess in numerical iteration. Subsequently, lamina constitutive law is employed to calculate the ultimate radial stresses for evaluating the mechanical sensitivity. Various pretensions, lateral pressures, and applied voltages across the piezoelectric layer were implemented, as a parametric study. Apparent piezoelectric effect tends to reveal only in a low pretension condition.
