Abstract :
This paper presents a new type of fiber-optic relaying that extends the coverage of mobile networks to heavily shadowed areas such as dead zones due to obstacles and buildings. The antenna facing the evolved Node B (eNB) is geographically separated from the antenna facing the UE, and the two antennas are connected via an optical fiber. We propose a design approach for a fiber-optic relaying considering the performance of the optical link and interference between the backhaul and access links. The theoretical desired-to-undesired-signal ratio (DUR) due to interference is discussed in terms of radio frequency and optical fiber length. Moreover, we show that the performance of fiber-optic relaying is superior to that of double-hop relaying.
