Abstract :
The CAN network problems of increased busload and bandwidth limit occur when system complexity increases in an automotive network. In order to solve the CAN network problems, the CAN FD (the CAN with Flexible Data-Rate) protocol has been newly developed. It provides two alternate bit rates and switch - after arbitration - from the lower to the higher bit rate. The CAN FD can solve the problems of the bandwidth limitation and busload increase of the CAN network, keeping most of the software and hardware of the CAN network. The CAN and CAN FD messages irregularly access the bus by the CSMA/CA method. If the busload is increased, the worst-case response time of each message will also increase, preventing the message from meeting its required deadline, which is an important parameter related to the satisfaction of a real-time condition. Therefore, the measurement of the busload and worst-case response time is essential. In this paper, we configure the CAN FD network in a simulation environment and measure the busload and worst-case response time. The results showed that the CAN FD network performed better than the CAN network. We use CANoe as a simulation tool to measure the busload and worst-case response time. The CAN FD network in the CANoe simulation environment reuses the database (up to 8 bytes) and network for legacy CAN.
