Young Visitors´ Preferences for Touch Screen Design in Museums

A museum is not just a place to display or store collection. Recently, it has become cultural centre and a place for education. However, young visitors do not visit the museum as often because the collections and displays are not attractive enough to them. Lately, there has been an increase in the usage of the touch screens in local museums, but there are still interface distractions causing lack of engagement in museum experience. The research aims to study touch screen design preferences in National Museum in order to enhance screen design and engage young visitors´ museum experience. In order to overcome design barriers which lead to distractions and dissatisfaction, it is important that young visitors´ perceptions and preferences are taken into consideration. The researcher will concentrate on design preference for touch screens, including navigational elements, text, display standards, and graphic style guide according to perception of study scope. Observations and interviews are conducted in the first stage of study in order to gain an overall image and understanding of young visitors´ perception and experience in using the touch screen in museums. In the second stage of study, the researcher will test out the prototype which adapts design guidelines so as to identify whether it has improved young visitors´ engagement in museum experience.
