Abstract :
Friendly fire is a common problem during hunting which can regularly result in a fatality of friends or family. Of the different forms of friendly fire one regular cause is the miss-identification of a target prior to discharging a weapon. Background research has shown many existing systems have made different attempts at target recognition to overcome this friendly fire problem however are yet to provide an adequate level of protection. This research aims at testing the extent that different hardware elements can act as composites to a solution. Concurrently a simulation is developed to which gathered hardware test results are used as inputs to drive the simulation towards reality. Finally composite hardware elements are joined to give indication of a possible final solution prototype. The results from the research will be the ability of the hardware to perform, derivation of the key parameters in protection systems and a simulation to which changes in protection parameters can be evaluated. The research concludes that radio range vs. gun range is the most dominate factor along with GPS accuracy and suggests that a 17% to 27% of dangerous shots can be correctly identified.
