Abstract
We propose the cognitive photonic network (CPN), which provides the highest degree of design plasticity in elastic optical networks. Autonomous network optimization to adapt to unpredictable traffic demands and photonic virtualization to achieve disruption-free operation are harmonized to serve the CPN.
