Abstract :
Renewable energy integration to achieve the challenges of energy independence and sustainable development is one the most important priorities of the European Union (EU). Biomass is expected to make an important contribution to the energy and environmental objectives. The 20% of energy consumed in the EU countries should be based on renewable energy sources with about two-thirds from biomass by 2020. The biomass is heterogeneous in terms of properties, spatial distribution and costs. All these elements have to be considered to energy feedstock. This paper presents a methodology for combining distribution and price data to develop a biomass supply from the woodland and cropland residues for thermal purposes to a Smartcity. Based on a GIS tool (BIORAISE) for the assessment an analysis of biomass, mass and energy were evaluated. A case study is applied to a future Spanish Smartcity of Málaga.
