Abstract :
Based on a forward scattering sum rule for a doubly periodic structure, fundamental limitation on the bandwidth of a free-space phased array element is derived. Expressions for bandwidth bounds are found in terms of the fractional bandwidth and the quality factor for wideband and narrowband responses. The derived bandwidth bound is numerically tested for a dipole array in free space.
