Abstract
Energy is an essential element in human life, requiring a sufficient, secure and accessible supply for the sustainability of modern societies. An enormous increase has been noticed in the demand for energy since the middle of the last century as a result of industrial development and population growth. New generating stations are required continuously to cope with the increasing electrical demand. Some of those stations are environmental friendly powered by renewable energy, whereas many others are fossil fuels based, challenging the principles of sustainability. This paper focuses on two sustainability indicators; the cost of electricity generation and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Case studies are carried out on an isolated micro-grid operating by a diesel distributed generator (DG) to sustainably assess the system with and without the integration of renewable energy resources and battery storages.
