Abstract :
This paper presents the application of firefly algorithm (FA) as load frequency control optimization technique in the interconnected reheat thermal power system. The FA is relatively a new optimization technique based on swarm intelligence. This paper investigates the efficiency and robustness of the FA as the optimization technique for a PID controller under three different loading scenarios. Investigation is carried out by comparing the performance of FA based PID against a conventional PID controller. Simulation results shows that the FA based PID performs better than the conventional PID controller. The proposed controller optimization is able to find the optimal gains of the LFC. The results indicate that the FA is robust and has good tuning capability.
