Abstract
Multi-phase Motor drive systems are considered for numerous industrial applications due to their inherent advantages that they offered when compared with the three-phase counterpart. The major advantages include higher torque density, lower torque pulsation, higher frequency of pulsation, lower dc link current harmonics, greater fault tolerance etc. Multi-phase drive systems are mainly suitable for niche application areas such as ship propulsion, electric and hybrid electric vehicles, heavy electrical industries etc. Great research effort are put worldwide to produce technically feasible and economically viable multi-phase drive systems. The talk will provide an overview on multi-phase drive systems, the current state-of-the-art and the new and emerging research on this area. Special and distinct applications of multi-phase machines are their series/parallel connection and decoupled control while being supplied by a single variable voltage and variable frequency source. The talk will also discuss this important application. The principle of decoupled dynamic control will be discusses. The advantages and disadvantages of the control technique will be highlighted. The application areas will be identified and discussed. The simulation and experimental results will be shared.
