Abstract :
Distributed Generation (DG) has got in recent years a well known term for the reduction of system losses in power distribution systems. Distributed generation is an electric power generation source connected directly to the distribution network or on the customer side of the meter. The application of Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) technique has been proposed for active and reactive power compensation of distribution systems. The active and reactive power compensation can be obtained by the optimal placement of DG and Capacitor. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified on a 13 bus system. The locations of DG and capacitor play an important role in maintaining voltage profiles. The results obtained indicate that by installing DG and capacitor whose location is optimized by BBO can significantly minimize the losses and improves the voltage profiles in distribution system. The results are compared with the results obtained by PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) technique. Simulation is done in MATLAB.
