Abstract
Simulations of shingled thermally assisted magnetic recording were carried out. The head field distribution and head field gradient had little effect on the signal-to-noise ratio of shingled tracks, whereas the heat spot radius and medium parameters had a much more significant influence. An areal density of 8 Tbit/in2 could be achieved with a shingled track width of 9 nm if very demanding conditions on the heat spot and recording medium parameters were met. Under more relaxed conditions areal densities in excess of 4 Tbit/in2 could be expected for shingled track widths of 15 nm.
