Abstract :
Cellular network faces numerous challenges in providing service to indoor users. Traditional macrobase stations provide limited coverage to indoor subscribers because they operate on high frequencies which reduce their ability to penetrate walls. Short range, low power, plug and play femtocell is an obvious answer to handle the above issue. Femtocell improves indoor service availability with higher data rate, better voice quality, longer battery life, less network traffic and negligible greenhouse gas emissions. However femtocell is not exempted from challenges. This paper examines the various technical challenges faced by the femtocell. The major factor that affects the QoS of femtocell is the interference faced by the network and thus this paper shows a keen interest in elaborating the interference management schemes. Besides the interference, this paper summarizes the solutions proposed in the literatures to overcome the other major challenges faced by femtocells.
