Abstract
Amplification of spontaneous emission (ASE) in erbium-doped single-mode fiber amplifiers operating at 1.53μm is studied theoretically and experimentally. The ASE noise spectra obtained from the theory are found to be in excellent qualitative agreement with the experimental data. We built a model to stimulate and analyze the impact of ASE. The model could be used to ameliorate the performance of Er3+-doped fiber lasers as well as to assess the noise characteristics of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers applied in WDM optical system.
