Abstract
An approach to the design of hierarchical control systems with Model Predictive Control (MPC) is presented. A mathematical formulation of the problem is given by considering a three layers structure and different time scales. The communication protocol between layers, needed to coordinate the control actions computed at the different levels, is also discussed. It is then shown how the proposed solution fits with some of the main structures adopted for hierarchical control.
