Abstract
This paper presents a new technique for the prediction of key parameters and associated geometrical selection of magnetic cores necessary for the design of transformers used in switching power supplies, and other applications of interest to the power electronics field. The techniques is based upon general formulation and solution of the governing electromagnetic field equation utilizing variational methods. The new technique is applicable for both low and high frequency designs, and is powerful in handling nonlinear magnetic materials. A Computer Aided Design Program was developed applying the technique presented. The program was used to predict magnetic core geometry as well as winding window areas and turns for specified transformer parameters. Final designs were tested, and were shown here to be in complete agreement with the required performance of a DC-to-DC conversion circuit employing a flyback converter.
