Abstract :
The state space is considered as partitioned with a linear dynamic equation in each partition. This piecewise linear (PL) viewpoint can be thought of as approximating a continuous nonlinear system. It also can be seen as a realisation of a class of hybrid systems. A class of controllers that come from this PL structure are presented. These controllers do not offer optimal control for the piecewise linear systems, but do offer a form of global stability. The controls that result are presented as set of upper bounds on the control that must be satisfied. This allows very simple piecewise constant controls to be designed that guarantee stability. It also offers an envelope in which a controller can be designed to operate. Provided the control input satisfies the upper bounds, then system stability is established and the controller has the freedom to optimise performance within the constraints.
