Abstract
In this paper we consider the problem of state space model reduction for a nonlinear plant under the influence of a control system. We relate this problem to the notion of balanced realizations by extending an existing definition of a nonlinear observability function. The special case of linear time-invariant systems in then consider in detail and some illustrative examples are presented.
