Abstract :
In the emerging landscape of instrumented runway pavements, there exists a lack of in-situ data from airports in a tropical region. The Federal Aviation Administration, the Hawai´i Department of Transportation, and the University of Hawai´i Civil Engineering Department are working hard to bring an instrumented pavement management system to the Honolulu International Airport in the coming years. The goal of this project is to better understand pavement responses in live runways, in order to modernize pavement design standards and discover methods for reducing required runway maintenance. The latest installation effort comes after working towards installing asphalt strain gages at nearby Kahului Airport was transferred to Honolulu in 2014. This installation will utilize many of the procurement efforts and findings from Kahului to ensure a successful installation in 2016. This report details the construction planning and procurement management necessary to facilitate a project of this kind in the state of Hawai´i.
