Abstract :
Arc flash and voltage rated clothing are required personal protective equipment (PPE) for performing a work task where there is potential exposure to live voltage or arc flash. On a large scale construction project where crews of electricians may be relocated to different facilities and reassigned from new construction to construction utilities, monitoring and tracking arc flash and voltage rated PPE is an enormous issue. The issue is compounded when only 20% of the electrical crews require the use of the arc flash and voltage rated electrical PPE. This specialized clothing requires maintenance, inspection and testing. When the prime construction contractor is responsible to supply the PPE for all construction workers, an efficient system is required to dispense and control the electrical PPE on a task specific basis for the electrical crews requiring the PPE. The need has driven the development of an innovative approach to issuing, distributing and tracking arc flash and voltage rated PPE.
