  • Abstract
This paper proposes a novel waveform generation module for multi-modal transmitters. It is based on a unified signal representation employing the Gabor expansion and allows for efficient implementation using FFT modules. The advantage of the proposed structure compared to software-based (SDR) approaches for multimode support is that it utilizes a common architecture for all signals that can be hardware optimized, which results in improved performance in terms of energy consumption and speed of operations. The module is parameterized, thus allowing for easy reconfiguration among different modes by an appropriate change of parameters. The Gabor expansion theory is utilized to initially constrain the applicable values for the parameters in order to support any single-or multi-carrier waveform. A design procedure is subsequently proposed for parameter selection taking into account complexity issues, while at the same time providing excellent performance in terms of side-lobe suppression of transmitted waveforms.
