Abstract
A novel beamforming (BF) receiver with adaptive detection (AD), which can effectively switch between a maximum-likelihood (ML) detection and a zero-forcing (ZF) detection based on instantaneous spatial conditions, is presented for a large-scale MIMO communication system over fading channels. The proposed system divides all receive antennas into many adaptive beamformers (ABFs) to reduce the array dimensions in order to simplify the signal detection process and employ the adaptivity benefits. The effects of different system configurations on symbol-error rate (SER) performance have been examined. It has been shown that the proposed MIMO system provides comparable SER performance, but with a remarkable complexity reduction as compared to that of the conventional ML receiver.
