Abstract :
The impact of technology and topology selection on the success of a HVDC interconnector project is significant. Rapid technology advances in power electronics, especially Voltage Source Converters (VSC), can offer new opportunities for the commercial success of projects. However, new technology can also bring risk to the end user if it is unproven. It is critical that engineers involved in the research, design and supply of technology have an appreciation of the project developer´s key drivers. This paper will discuss the key aspects in the development of a HVDC interconnector to the UK and the impact that technology can have on these. The paper will discuss the impacts throughout the project lifecycle from initial concept through to operation & maintenance. During the initial concept issues such as converter station location, cable route and , grid system connection points have a major effect on the technology decisions being made by the developer. Technology advances may enable barriers for some projects to be broken down allowing for more options at an early stage. As the project moves towards financial investment aspects such as regulatory agreements, multiple partners and revenue markets become critical. These can have an impact on the specification of the technology required. Once the project has moved into its operational phase then the ability to safely maximise the interconnector usage are critical. As a result a focus on resilient operation and rapid replacement and maintenance are key drivers.
