Abstract :
The knowledge about available bandwidth (avband) on a data path between two hosts can be widely used for almost any telecommunication issues. It is important for streaming applications, for verification of quality of service in a network, for selection of the best server for providing improved service and, for sure, it could give a significant positive impact on development of congestion control algorithms for reliable data transfer protocols. There are many algorithms and implemented tools, which provide capabilities for measuring avband. This paper focuses on the improvement of calibrated pahtload algorithm for avband measurements. During this research a new tool for avband measurement called Kite has been developed. The main improvements pertain to evaluation of the optimal amount of probe samples for available bandwidth estimation on high-speed paths up to 10 Gbps as well as to the calculation of probe rate for following iterations of measurements - selection of the next rate depends on variation of jitter from previous iteration.
