Abstract :
In the present work, compression of medical images using Daubechies 9/7 and thresholding technique is introduced. In this approach one level Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is applied on the medical Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MRT) skull image of size 256×256×8 bits. The approach uses Daubechies 9/7 filter, a biorthogonal filter, which provides good quality image reconstruction after Inverse Discrete Wavelet Transform (IDWT). Thresholding is applied on detail sub-bands but not on the approximation sub-band. A three phase quantization is applied afterward on each sub-band. MATLAB v. 2013 has been used for the modeling purpose. The obtained results show compression ratio in the range of 3.69 to 5.17 with high peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) values and effective mean-square-error (MSE) essential for reconstruction of good quality image after decompression. Proposed approach offers reduced mathematical and structural complexity than previous works.
