Abstract :
National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) deploying moored buoys in the Northern Indian Ocean. Moored buoys collect in-situ time series met-ocean data which is considered as reference for validating satellite data and operational / numerical model output as these observations are accurate and reliable. The wave parameters such as the significant wave height, average wave period and mean wave direction etc, are derived from the measurements of Motion Reference Unit (MRU-6) by data processing system called GENI which is imported from FOAS (Furgo Oceanor AS). NIOT has indigenously developed a data processing algorithm for derived wave parameters and indigenized the data acquisition system (IDAS) for wave buoys. In order to validate the new buoy, the indigenized developed wave buoy was deployed in Northern Bay off Paradip at Lat. 18° N Long. 89° E along with a proven buoy. The wave parameters from both the buoys were compared and also compared with the significant wave height (Hm0) from JASON-2 altimeter data. In this particular time both buoys and satellite captured the data during Thane cyclone. The inter comparison of data from the buoys show a very good correlation. Also the comparisons of buoy data with that of satellite match well.
