Abstract :
In recent years the use of nonlinear load has been increased exponentially which results in poor power quality. The distorted wave-shapes of voltage and current can upset the end user equipments. Hence it is necessary to measure these harmonics correctly which is common type of distortion that repeats every cycle. Harmonics in the distribution sector are typically measured using standard power analyzer which is not affordable to every consumer due to its high cost. This paper propose a simple and low cost solution using data acquisition (DAQ) card and Personal computer (PC). To understand the present scenario a market survey has been done and readings are taken at ten different sites. It is observed that the current harmonics are crossing the extremities set by IEEE519-1992, IEC and EN standards. The developed system can be used for real time measurement of total harmonic distortion as well as for individual harmonic components with very good accuracy. The validation of developed hardware is confirmed through experimentation at an educational institute. The performance of proposed solution is promising in consideration with the cost.
