Abstract :
A gm-boosted Colpitts voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) for millimeter wave application is presented in this paper. By employing a new self-switched biasing technique, the flicker noise corner of the circuit is reduced, leading to improved phase noise performance. Furthermore, trans-conductance is boosted by using a modified cross-coupled pair with parallel capacitance networks. The novel VCO is demonstrated in 65nm CMOS with 7% frequency tuning range from 62-66.5 GHz. With 1 V supply and 5 mA current, phase noise of -113.7 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset is measured.
