Abstract
Summary form only given. Linear transformer driver (LTD) technology has been used to develop compact pulsed power generators for industrial applications. A prototype device has been developed in order to demonstrate the advantages of solid-state L T D compared with conventional repetitive pulsed power sources. It consists of 30 modules each uses 24 power MOSFETs as switches. The maximum output voltage reaches 29 kV for resistive load of 120 Ω with pulse width variabe in the range of 50 ~ 170 ns. It is observed that different modules can be switched at different timings so that the output voltage waveform can be shaped by adding the output pulses of all modules with adequate relative delays. This fact enables us to generate a variety of pulsed waveforms without changing the hardware of the generator. In addition, an automatic waveform determination software can be embedded into microchip of the LTD controller, indicating the potential for “smart pulsed power”1.
