Abstract :
AFTER A WINTER of rain and frosts - come to think of it, after a spring of rain and frosts - the roads around here are looking like the face of an incautious sunbather. Layer after layer of tarmac has peeled away to reveal long-lost road surfaces below, and that has got me thinking about the man behind tarmac.
