Code merit in digital magnetic recording channels

Taking high bit density as a requirement it has been shown that density ratio, timing window T_w/T_b, and a modified figure of merit DR. T_w/T_T are justifiable measures of the performance of practical recording systems. These results apply specifically to a channel ´equalised flat´ but different equalisation schemes may lead to modified code requirements.
