Abstract :
Developments in high-definition television (HDTV) in the US, Europe, and Japan are reviewed. The Japanese direct-broadcast-satellite HDTV system is described, and its advantages and drawbacks are examined. European activity is briefly described. The FCC enquiry into HDTV in the US is discussed. The focus is on the issues of standards and compatibility.<>
