Abstract
A novel technique is proposed for forward-scatter frequency-derived distributed sensing along a birefringent singlemode optical fibre. This uses a pump probe scheme to generate a signal frequency in forward-scattered light by means of the optical Kerr effect. The sensing action has been demonstrated by applying transverse pressure to a section of the fibre.
