Abstract :
This paper defines the educational goals of an electric power engineering program as perceived at The Ohio State University (OSU). The OSU Electrical Engineering curriculum in the power engineering area has been designed and developed specifically to meet these stated goals. Characteristics of this curriculum are: (a) both machines and power systems are components of the two undergraduate required courses, (b) several course sequences have been developed to provide a broad range of course topics in power engineering, (c) unique features of the curriculum are: treatment of technical-environmental effects of high voltage transmission systems, treatment of consulting-construction electrical engineering topics in the industrial/commercial power systems area, existence and utilization of a high voltage laboratory, course in power electronics, courses in electric machine design and control, course in engineering economics of power systems, (d) utilization of term assignments, case studies, design problems, plant visits. The electric power engineering program at OSU is augmented by supporting courses in electrical, mechanical and nuclear engineering, as well as by some non-engineering courses. This paper also reviews the activities of the power area graduate and research programs, and the development of continuing power education and extension activities.
