  • Abstract
A university exists for the purpose of service. A discussion of this service is given from the point of view of the electric power curriculum of an electrical engineering department within a state-supported university. The comments apply to any such department within almost any state-supported university. The discussion begins with a definition of education, followed by a breakdown of the clientele served. A detailed discussion of the restrictions placed upon an institution by students, parents, industry, the profession, the people of the state through the legislature, the university administration, the educational structure, and competition from other universities is given. This subject was originally presented to an advisory committee composed of industrial representatives. Quotes from committee members are given, thereby allowing some insight into the concerns of the industrial representatives.
