Abstract
A successful engineering laboratory experience requires the same pedagogic attention, and generally more time and money, than a corresponding classroom lecture. Substituting small size units and modern electronic instrumentation for large equipment and electromagnetic instruments results in a viable electric machines laboratory operation. These changes produce an efficient and rewarding mode of experimental electric power engineering education. While most of these innovative concepts relate directly to the electric machines laboratory in particular, many of these concepts might serve as guidelines for other upper level instructional laboratories.
