Digital logic and microprocessor laboratories-what to build and what to buy

Abstract :
The tremendous cost reduction of small computer systems in recent years has caused a notable shift to microprocessor-based instrumentation. New applications for digital logic circuitry and microprocessors are being developed everyday. Electrical engineering curricula are being reshaped to accommodate courses in microprocessors and small computer systems. It is highly desirable that the student receive meaningful laboratory work in this important area. It is imperative that efficient use be made of both time and money. A choice must be made between studying the intricate design of subsystems and that of buying subsystems and interconnecting them. It is suggested here that the student be given two laboratories in digital logic and microprocessors, one to cover basic fundamentals and the other to investigate applications. A combination of buying several assembled and tested microcomputers and building and testing duplicate circuitry is recommended.
