Abstract
The implementation complexity and error performance of buffered variable length (BVL) encoding and typical sequence block (TSB) encoding for discrete memoryless sources using a synchronous channel are compared. The BVL encoding is found to be superior to the TSB encoding when the BVL buffer size and TSB block length are sufficiently large.
