Abstract :
The advent of the digital switch is causing digital technology to be introduced into the North American Telephone Administrations at an ever increasing rate. Economic reasons alone necessitate existing analog facilities remain in service for many years, even decades to come. This paper describes an integrated frequency division to time division multiplex converter (FDM/PCM) which permits an existing analog plant to be economically interfaced with digital switching equipment. Conversely, the FDM/PCM Converter can be used to convert a 24 channel 1.544 Mbit/s T1 digital signal into two 12 channel analog outputs in any of the 11 groups in the standard Group A and Supergroup 1 and 2 ranges for transmission over anlog radio facilities.
