Abstract :
An electron cooling device for cooling proton (or antiproton) beams at intermediate energies is in preparation. An inhomogeneous waveguide supporting a slow wave is proposed as pickup (PU) to measure the transverse electron cooling temperature. A synchronous pickup is essentially a structure in which the phase velocity of the propagating wave coincides with the beam velocity. The design of the pickup and the sensitivity and laboratory results are presented. A design procedure for finding the PU dimensions is indicated, and an example of such a design is reported. The validity of the principle of the slow-wave PU has been demonstrated theoretically as well as experimentally. A reasonable agreement between measurements on the PU device and the theory developed here has been obtained
