Abstract :
The Raman fibre amplifier has the attraction that the transmission fibre is its own amplifier which obviates the need for special fibres. However, it has largely been superseded by the doped erbium fibre which when pumped to an order of magnitude less power provides the same gain as its Raman fibre counterpart.
