Abstract :
The author examines sustainable development, which has become the quintessential paradigm for addressing the worldwide dilemma of advancing economic development while protecting environmental quality, from the broad perspectives of systems analysis. He attempts to determine whether sustainable development is a new philosophical paradigm that is more encompassing than currently available approaches to solving global and large-scale complex problems or a grass-roots manifestation of a holistic-systemic philosophy well supported by ample theory, methodology, and problem-solving algorithms. The prospects of success for sustainable development is also discussed
