  • Abstract
What role does technical communication play in training? Despite the trend toward leaner and meaner staffs, more and more companies, particularly those in high technology, are recognizing that employee and customer training is a vital necessity rather than a superfluous luxury. Managers and individuals who really-care about what goes on realize that good quality training really makes a difference. They demand it for themselves and those around them. In the long term, good-training eventually pays huge dividends in terms of smarter work habits, and continuous improvement of the work environment. Nevertheless, developing customized training programs is still an art. There is a role for skilful technical communicators, in discerning what training is relevant for a given person on a given job. Besides determining what knowledge is needed to do a job, there are human emotions and motivational factors to address as well. The IEEE and its various divisions and sister societies offer a wide range of short courses, and tutorials. Moreover, their publishing activities have resulted in high-quality written materials, which could form the-basis for up-to-date technical training materials on many topics
