Abstract :
Co-alloy perpendicular recording media with a crystalline soft underlayer (c-SUL) is studied. Media with c-SUL can exhibit narrower c-axis dispersion with thinner intermediate layers and higher coercivity. On the other hand, c-SUL may show a higher noise, if not properly designed. We propose a stacked seedlayer design for the c-SUL. The noise can be reduced to the same level as that of amorphous soft underlayer (a-SUL)
