Abstract :
To determine the effect of the substrate on the properties of ¿-Fe2O3 film obtained by oxidizing Fes3O4, the authors prepared γ-Fe2O3 films from Fe3O4 formed on fused quartz, sapphire, Ti, Au and Al, both with and without a 3500 Å SiO2 film evaporated on the surface. The maximum value of the coercivity was found to depend on the substrate, being higher for films formed on substrates with smaller thermal expansion coefficients. It was concluded that tensile stresses induced in films during oxidation lead to higher coercivities, while in-plane compressive stresses tend to suppress the coercivity.
